Proofreading and copyediting

For the sake of the most edits that we receive, light editing (or copy editing) and proofreading follow the same basic process

A standard copy- or light-editing involves checking that an appropriate style or template has been followed, that heading hierarchies, paragraph indentations, margins, and fonts and their sizes (and, for example, whether bold, italic, super- or subscript) have been standardized, and (for CVs and reports) that any text widows and orphans, and, wherever possible, split tables, have been eliminated. In instances where any of this is not the case then the file is corrected accordingly. If a document requires only a light editing, then only minor errors in grammar, sentence structure, or spelling will need to be rectified

By proofreading we ensure that any required corrections or changes to a document have been made, and that no errors have crept in as a consequence of 'Track Changes.' If any further correction or clarification is required, then the edit will be returned to the author for a second round of approval or clarification. One further proofreading round might be required before the final edit is signed off as satisfactory

Editing

If a substantial edit or rewording of your file is necessary, we will contact you in advance (given fees may differ from those identified here). Only with your approval we will commence a substantive edit

As for typical edits, changes will be made or suggested on your file using the 'Track Changes' option in MS Word. Sentences and paragraphs might be restructured, blocks of text might be relocated throughout the manuscript to improve its flow, and numerous corrections might be made directly to the text. As for standard or light edits, we will also ensure that an appropriate style or template is followed, that heading hierarchies, paragraph indentations, margins, and fonts and their sizes are standardized, and (for CVs and reports) that any text widows and orphans, and, if possible, split tables, are eliminated

During Stage II or III clarification edits we will check that all necessary corrections have been made, that any suggested changes to text have been made, and that any query we had in the original text has been answered. We will also ensure that no new errors have crept in during the editing process (in new text, or, which can be a problem with substantive edits, as a consequence of 'Track Changes')
